I was raised in Africa and, after graduating from the University of York, England, studied biology at the University of Oregon. Eschewing a hard core research career, I adventured around various corners of South America, including the Amazon and the Galapagos Islands.

Combining my love of writing and travel resulted in the leading travel guide to the Amazon, The Amazon: The Bradt Travel Guide, now in its third edition. I have also contributed several articles and book reviews to American Scientist, the magazine of Sigma Xi, a professional association for scientists, where I was Director of Emerging Technologies until August 2008.

Until September 2009, I was Social Media Manager at Capstrat, a strategic communications company in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Presently, I am providing social media consulting through Harris Social Media. Please visit the website for more information about my consulting services.
